Direct electric heating pays full price for every unit of warmth

Storage heaters and panel radiators are resistance heaters. They turn electricity into heat directly, and physics caps that trade at one unit of heat for every unit of electricity. There is no way to tune or upgrade past it.

That would be fine if electricity were cheap, but per unit of energy it costs considerably more than mains gas. A home with no gas connection ends up buying its warmth at the highest rate on the market, unit for unit, all winter.

Storage heaters add their own frustrations on top. They charge overnight on the strength of a guess about tomorrow, and on a cold evening the bricks are often spent by the time you most want the heat.

How a heat pump changes the arithmetic

An air-to-air heat pump does not turn electricity into heat. It uses electricity to move heat, gathering warmth from the outside air and releasing it indoors, the same trick a fridge does in reverse. Even cold winter air holds heat that can be captured this way.

Because moving heat takes far less energy than making it, the unit delivers several times more heat per unit of electricity than a storage heater. The £2,500 grant, and exactly where it stands

There is a government grant of £2,500 for air-to-air heat pumps, and because the systems we spec are reversible heat pumps rather than cooling-only units, they are the type of equipment the scheme covers. Here is the honest position on timing.

Vouchers are not yet being issued. The scheme is waiting on installer certification to catch up, and nobody can honestly tell you the date that will change, so we will not pretend to. Do air-to-air heat pumps work in a British winter?
Yes. Modern units are designed to keep heating in temperatures well below freezing and are standard equipment in countries with far colder winters than ours. Output does ease off on the very coldest days, which is why honest sizing matters: a unit specced for your actual room, not a brochure room, holds its temperature through a normal UK winter. What happens to my storage heaters?
Nothing has to happen on day one. Many people leave them on the wall as a backup for the first winter and simply stop charging them once they trust the heat pump, then have them removed later to free the wall space. Your installer will talk through the sensible order for your rooms.
Is it noisy?
The indoor unit is a low fan hum, and on its quiet settings it is fitted in bedrooms as a matter of routine. The outdoor unit is quiet by modern standards, and good siting keeps it away from bedroom windows, yours and your neighbour’s. Noise limits are built into the planning rules for these units, and a properly certified installer works to them.
Do I need planning permission?
Usually not. Most home installations fall under permitted development, with conditions on where the outdoor unit can go. Conservation areas, listed buildings and flats need more care, and leaseholders normally need the freeholder’s consent.
